Driving Healthcare Professional Awareness of Antimicrobial Resistance Through Digital Engagement

Overview

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant healthcare challenge that occurs when microorganisms develop the ability to resist medicines designed to kill them or stop their growth. This can make infections more difficult to treat, prolong illnesses, increase healthcare costs, and raise the risk of death.

A three-month digital campaign conducted between July and September 2024 aimed to increase awareness among healthcare professionals (HCPs) across India. The campaign focused on critical care specialists, microbiologists, nephrologists, urologists, pulmonologists, infectious disease experts, and surgeons.

The initiative used educational video content and multiple digital communication channels to reach relevant medical professionals and support awareness, recall, and engagement around antimicrobial resistance.

Campaign Approach

The campaign adopted an omnichannel digital engagement strategy to connect with healthcare professionals across India.

The key communication channels included:

  • Mobile application
  • Website
  • Email
  • SMS
  • WhatsApp

Educational video content featuring doctors formed the core of the campaign. Two video content pieces were shared weekly to maintain visibility and encourage HCP engagement. A focused WhatsApp marketing strategy complemented the wider digital outreach, helping reinforce communication throughout the three-month campaign period.

The campaign targeted seven groups of healthcare professionals to ensure that the outreach covered a broad range of specialties involved in patient care.

Methodology

The campaign followed a structured methodology combining educational video distribution, specialty-based targeting, multichannel communication, and performance measurement.

The outreach targeted 85,411 healthcare professionals across India, including:

  • Critical care specialists: 9,122
  • Microbiologists: 2,032
  • Nephrologists: 2,114
  • Urologists: 2,168
  • Pulmonologists: 4,933
  • Infectious disease experts: 42
  • Surgeons: 65,000

Two educational video content pieces featuring doctors were shared weekly to support consistent engagement and improve audience perception. Content was distributed through the mobile application, website, email, SMS, and WhatsApp.

A dedicated WhatsApp marketing strategy was implemented alongside the other digital touchpoints to encourage further interaction.

Campaign performance was assessed using qualitative indicators, including awareness, recall, and perception, as well as quantitative metrics such as reach, impressions, clicks, and click-through rate (CTR).

Result

Between July and September 2024, the campaign generated substantial reach and engagement among healthcare professionals across India.

The campaign achieved:

  • Reach: 85,411 healthcare professionals
  • Impressions: 384,551
  • Clicks/Interactions: 31,629
  • CTR: 8%
  • WhatsApp Open Rate: 51%

The campaign reached 85,411 healthcare professionals and generated 384,551 impressions, providing visibility across the targeted medical specialties.

It also recorded 31,629 clicks and an 8% click-through rate, demonstrating interaction with the campaign content. The 51% WhatsApp open rate further highlighted the effectiveness of WhatsApp as a communication channel within the broader outreach strategy.

These results demonstrate how educational video content, supported by coordinated digital distribution, can help healthcare campaigns reach a broad professional audience and generate measurable engagement.

Conclusion

The campaign highlights the potential of an omnichannel digital strategy to support healthcare professional awareness of important healthcare challenges such as antimicrobial resistance.

By combining doctor-led educational videos, specialty-based outreach, multiple digital communication channels, and performance tracking, the initiative established a structured approach to engaging healthcare professionals across India.

With 85,411 HCPs reached, 384,551 impressions, 31,629 clicks, an 8% CTR, and a 51% WhatsApp open rate, the campaign demonstrates the value of coordinated digital communication in supporting awareness and engagement among medical professionals.
